As summer approaches, water safety becomes a growing concern for parents of young children. We all want our children to be safe and have fun in the water! While it can be intimidating to read all the facts about children and drowning, Swim Kids Waco is committed to equipping families with the tools needed for creating a safe environment around the water, whether you’re at home or on vacation. Our new blog series will teach you the ABCD’s of Water Safety.
Our third area of water safety includes classes for kids as well as adults.
When you enroll your child in swimming lessons, you’re giving them the lifelong gift of safety AND giving them an opportunity to grow in confidence by learning a new skill. Whether your child loves to swim or is nervous (or even very scared), swimming lessons can empower kids to overcome their fears and grow in new ways.
As they progress through the levels, kids gain confidence and discover how much fun the water can be! They learn to be competent and safe in the water, which every parent wants for their kids. Each level builds on the previous ones as they learn different swim strokes and build endurance as swimmers.
If your child doesn’t like to get their face wet or is hesitant to lay back in the water and learn to float, our beginner level classes (and private lessons) help children to face their fears in a safe and encouraging environment so they can begin to enjoy being in the water.
Even if your child likes to swim and can already do some things, consider if they have the skills they will need for their whole life. At Swim Kids Waco, we consider a swimmer “safe” when they can swim 300 yards, tread water and float independently.
Some day your kids will be teenagers and adults swimming without you. So, prepare them to swim well and understand water safety concepts so that as they grow, they are ready for whatever aquatic environment they encounter. Whether they go to a lake house or the beach with friends or decide they want to try surfing or scuba diving later in life, you want them to be able to enjoy their lives safely. Swimming is a life skill, a fun and life-saving gift that will last them for a lifetime. By the end of Level 3, a kid should be able to do all of these skills (swim 300 yards, tread water and float independently).
Does your child love to swim and want to swim as a sport and method of exercise? Swimming is EXCELLENT EXERCISE and something people can do through old age to stay healthy. Our stroke skills classes go up through a junior swim team where they learn all 4 competitive strokes, side stroke, elementary backstroke, flip turns and everything they would need to be a skilled swimmer and go on to competing if they want to do that!
While our traditional lessons equip kids to gradually grow in their swimming skills, usually in weekly lessons, survival swim programs (like Infant Aquatics) will train babies and young children specifically in survival skills over the course of 6 to 8 weeks with lessons four times a week. By the end of the session, babies will learn to roll over to float and those 16 months and older will learn to swim-float-swim to the side of the pool if they were to fall in. You can learn more about our survival swim program here.
Both types of lessons are good options and effective. Survival swim lessons just require a larger initial investment (time and financial) but they produce quicker results.
Swimming lessons have been found to reduce the risk of drowning by 88% for children ages 1-4! But remember – no child is “drown-proof.” Even if a child knows how to swim, they should still be supervised by an adult and never swim alone.
While we often think of swimming lessons for children, adults can benefit from swimming lessons as well! Whether you never learned to swim or float before and want to learn the basics to feel comfortable in the water or perhaps you’re training for a triathlon and need to hone your skills before the big race, swimming lessons can be useful for beginners, athletes and anyone in between.
As parents, grandparents or caregivers, it’s also valuable to know CPR in case of emergency. You can find options to get CPR certified through American Red Cross or American Heart Association throughout the year.
At Swim Kids Waco, we offer a FREE Safety Course in the fall and spring that includes water safety, CPR and first aid. It is NOT a CPR certification class, but you’ll learn the skills needed to perform CPR. It’s just one afternoon for an hour and a half. You can email swimkidswaco@gmail.com to find out when the next Safety Course is being held.

Julie Fulcher2024-05-15 Ben was a fantastic teacher for our two-year-old! He was so patient with her. I would highly recommend Swim Kids Waco! Hannah Kubacak2024-05-03 We have had a wonderful experience with this program. Miss Lahana has helped my toddler learn so many new skills and gain confidence in the water. She has been incredibly patient and provided great lessons for my strong-willed three-year-old. We will definitely continue using this program to further develop swimming skills. Ashley Sabori2024-04-03 Updated Review: We have been partaking in swim lessons with Swim Kids Waco since 2019 and are immensely delighted with the progress and success in our children’s learning & swim skills. Initially, our son started in lessons and currently he is swimming within their jr. swim team sessions. Our daughter is advancing nicely through their programs and can swim at a higher proficiency than we expected at her age. They are always excited to attend and enjoy the SKW staff who have an inherent ability to inspire courage and make each session both purposeful and fun. Their administrative coordination is top notch, very attentive and communicates well with parents. The Center, where they host sessions the majority of the year, also made some improvements to the locker rooms. Overall their commitment to high quality instruction, seamless coordination and innovative programming has continued to make our family loyal to their services. We look forward to further expansions as they move toward opening their own facility. Thank you for your dedication to our children’s safety and confidence in swimming ability. Previous Review: I am very happy with the quality of instruction that Swim Kids Waco provides to my child. The attention to detail and kind demeanor of the instructors really boost the value of their services. Coupled with the class size to instructor ratio, we have seen large improvements in our son’s swim ability and safety awareness. In my experience, the quality of this program shows the level of professionalism and commitment to not only skill but education (I grew up in a water centric family, lifeguarded for many years, and managed an aquatics program including swim instructors). They provide cost effective options to swim lessons, opportunities for makeup sessions, clearly defined expectations for each swim level, and dynamic instruction. They have definitely met my expectations and we will continue to enroll our children in future offerings. The only improvement I would humbly suggest would be maintenance and upkeep to the facility where the sessions are conducted, from what I can tell the majority of the time as the location can move depending on the season (The Center). I don’t believe this has a direct correlation to Swim Kids Waco, but they might want to make a suggestion (or continue to do so) to the facility that maintenance be prioritized in both the aquatic area and the locker rooms. The environment is not terrible, however, there are many opportunities for improvement. If the facility were in better repair I probably would have ranked five stars. Chelsy Cork2024-01-25 We’ve used Swim Kids Waco for all three of our children ranging from Infant Aquatics with our 17 month old, learning how to swim in a beginner level class with our 2.5 year old, abs building confidence in higher level classes with our 5 year old. Their instructors are gentle yet also encourage our kids to move out of their comfort zone and actually learn how to swim. They prioritize water safety and are very efficient with their lessons. We come back summer after summer and have had multiple instructors. Each experience has been wonderful! The owners are the nicest family and truly care about kids being safe around water. Kallie Boyd2024-01-25 My son looked forward to swim class every day! The process was excellent and the instructors were so great with him! Kelly Stilwell2024-01-20 We love SKW! In just a few months my kids went from being non-swimmers to swimming across the pool on their own. They look forward to lessons with Miss Allie every week! She is fun and encouraging while also holding them accountable to do their best and grow their comfort zones. Everything we could hope for in an instructor! We are grateful! Brandy S2024-01-16 Update: we now have our 3 and 5 year old in swim classes and they love it!! Our 3 yr old HATED water and Swim Kids Waco has completely changed that for us! I would recommend over and over again. We’ve been with Swim Kids Waco for a year and a half. We started in the parent and me classes when our oldest was 2 yo. We initially started solely to teach our son water safety. Our son loves it so much that we keep going for the skills!! He’s learned so much and can swim at just 4yo thanks to Swim Kids Waco!!! Camryn Aiello2023-12-24 Above and beyond. Swim Kids Waco and my daughter’s instructor, Allie, has given my daughter and family something priceless, peace of mind. My daughter went from being water scared to water proud! She swims confidently and safely. The pace of the lessons is fantastic and meets the emotional and physical needs of each different child. 10/10 We will be back again and again.
